Sherwood sits just north and east of North Little Rock, with older streets near Kiehl Avenue and newer growth up through Gravel Ridge. It runs 14 city parks and a historic municipal golf course, and US 67/167 puts downtown Little Rock within easy reach.
The feel
Sherwood grew from farms and dairies into a town in 1948, when residents incorporated and elected Hal P. LaCoste as the first mayor. It became a first-class city in 1971. The Sylvan Hills area, where Justin Matthews started a rural subdivision in 1926, joined the city in 1976, and the Gravel Ridge community voted to annex into Sherwood in 2008. The result is a city of distinct pockets tied together by Kiehl Avenue and Highway 107. Sherwood had about 32,700 residents at the 2020 Census.
The homes
Closer to Kiehl Avenue and the North Little Rock line, many streets were built after World War II and through the 1970s, so brick ranches and split-levels are common. The Sylvan Hills area has some older homes on larger, wooded lots. North along Highway 107 and into Gravel Ridge, you will find more recent subdivisions and new construction alongside rural properties. Some homes back to the golf course or one of the city's small lakes. Ask about build year and any recent roof work, since housing age varies widely by area.
Schools
Sherwood's public schools are part of the Pulaski County Special School District. The Sylvan Hills schools, including Sylvan Hills High School, which opened in 1956, are located in the city. LISA Academy North, a public STEM charter school, opened in Sherwood in 2008. Attendance zones are drawn by address and can change, so verify the assigned schools for a specific home with PCSSD before you buy. The Arkansas Department of Education's My School Info site posts public data for each campus.
Getting around
US 67/167 runs along the east side of the city and connects south to I-40 and I-30 in North Little Rock, and north to Jacksonville and Cabot. Arkansas Highway 107 runs north and south through the middle of town and up into Gravel Ridge, and Kiehl Avenue is the main east to west corridor. Downtown Little Rock is about a 15 to 20 minute drive from much of the city outside rush hour.
Life here
Sherwood runs 14 parks, including Austin Lake Park, Lake Cherrywood Park, Indianhead and Henson Park, plus a dog park and Sherwood Forest, a property the city bought in 1994. The Bill Harmon Recreation Center opened in 2002 and anchors indoor sports and fitness. The Greens at North Hills is a city-owned golf course on land where Justin Matthews built the Sylvan Hills Country Club in 1927; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
Owning here
The North Little Rock Electric Department lists Sherwood in its service area, so some Sherwood homes buy power from that city-owned utility while others are served by other providers. Confirm electric, water and sewer providers by address, especially in Gravel Ridge. Property taxes are set through Pulaski County. Sherwood was hit by a damaging tornado on March 31, 2023, and some neighborhoods rebuilt afterward, so ask sellers about the age of roofs and repairs.
